BTech GMRS 20V2 Review

The BTech GMRS 20V2 is a reliable GMRS mobile radio offering solid performance, durability, and convenient operation. Whether for casual users or those needing dependable communication in mobile or stationary setups, the 20V2 is a practical choice.

Overview

The GMRS 20V2 is a 20-watt mobile radio housed in a durable metal chassis. All functions are controlled through the microphone for simplicity. It incorporates BTech’s second-generation GMRS firmware, bringing advanced features like 200 programmable channels, NOAA weather alerts, and scanning capabilities. The onboard menus make channel customization easy.
Its Tri-Watch display allows monitoring of up to three channels (semi-duplex), I prefer to only monitor one channel at a time by using the synced mode which simplifies single-channel use.

Key Features

  • Price: Positioned at the affordable end of GMRS mobile radios, the one used for this review was purchased for $109.89 from Amazon.
  • Power Output: Advertised as 20 watts. Your wattage may vary.
  • Repeater Compatibility: Extends communication reach.
  • Microphone-Controlled Interface: Having the display and controls on the microphone simplifies operation and is ideal for compact spaces. This one will be installed under the passenger seat of my SUV.
  • Durable Design: A sturdy metal chassis, with submersible capability, suitable for mobile or base station use. I’m not an off-roader, but I get how some from that community might want a rugged, water resistant radio.
  • NOAA Weather and Scanning: Access weather alerts and use channels for scanning.
  • Customizable Programming: Program up to 200 channels, customize privacy codes, and easily switch modes.
  • Tri-Watch Display: Monitor three channels simultaneously or focus on one. As mentioned above, I choose to focus on one.
  • Antenna Flexibility: Compatible with standard UHF connectors (SO-239).

Limitations

  • GMRS-Only TX: Limited to GMRS frequencies for transmitting, which may not suit users seeking dual-band capability.

Comparison

The GMRS 20V2 stands out for its affordability, rugged build, and programming features. Its microphone-controlled design simplifies installation, especially in tight spaces. While it lacks dual-band capabilities, it compensates with excellent GMRS-focused functionality.

Conclusion

The BTech GMRS 20V2 is a feature-packed mobile radio. Its power output, repeater support, and intuitive interface make it a practical choice for clear, long-distance communication. Paired with a quality external antenna, it’s a versatile and durable tool for mobile or base station setups. From my office I was able to hit a repeater 31 miles away.

This radio is ideal for users who value simplicity, flexibility, and strong performance, as well as those needing a compact radio that can be mounted under a seat.
