Tidradio Overview, Features and Opinion

The Tidradio TD-H3 is a compact and feature-rich handheld radio that offers a lot of value for its price. It’s available in two models, but they are essentially identical and can be unlocked to expand their frequency range.

Positive Aspects:

  1. Compact and Lightweight: The TD-H3 is one of the smallest and lightest radios in its class, making it easy to carry around. Its small form factor and lightweight design make it ideal for outdoor activities, travel, or everyday use.
  2. USB-C Charging: The USB-C charging port is a welcome addition, making it convenient to charge the radio using a variety of cables and power sources. This eliminates the need for proprietary chargers and ensures compatibility with modern devices.
  3. Bluetooth Programming: The ability to program the radio wirelessly via Bluetooth is a great feature that saves time and hassle. You can easily transfer frequencies, settings, and firmware updates to the radio without needing to connect it to a computer.
  4. Repeater Capable: The radio supports repeater operation, which can extend its range and improve signal quality in areas with poor reception. This is especially useful for users who need to communicate over long distances or in challenging environments.
  5. Frequency Copy: The frequency copy feature allows you to quickly copy frequencies from one radio to another. This is convenient for setting up multiple radios with the same frequencies or for sharing settings with other users.
  6. Dual PTT: The dual PTT button allows you to switch between two different frequencies easily. This is helpful for monitoring multiple channels or for quickly switching between a primary and secondary frequency.
  7. Enhanced Flashlight: The built-in flashlight is brighter and more focused than on previous models. It’s a useful tool for navigating in the dark or for signaling for help in an emergency.
  8. DTMF Lock: The DTMF lock feature prevents accidental keypresses. This helps to avoid unintended actions and ensures that the radio’s settings remain stable.

Negative Aspects:

  1. Slow Scan Speed: The scan speed is slow, which can be frustrating when trying to monitor multiple channels. It takes longer to scan through a list of frequencies compared to other radios.
  2. Non-Adjustable Scan Resume Delay: The scan resume delay is non-adjustable, which can cause you to miss short transmissions. Once the radio stops scanning to receive a transmission, it takes a fixed amount of time to resume scanning, potentially missing other important signals.
  3. Noisy Reception: The radio can be noisy in some reception conditions, which can make it difficult to understand weak signals. This can be particularly problematic in areas with interference or poor signal strength.
  4. Limited Battery Life: The battery life is not as good as some other radios in its class. You may need to carry extra batteries or a portable charger to ensure that the radio stays powered throughout the day.
  5. Noisy Audio: Noisy audio quality, especially at higher volumes, can make it difficult to understand transmissions. This can be annoying and can hinder effective communication.
  6. Lack of Weather Alerts: The radio does not have built-in weather alert functionality. This means that you won’t be able to receive alerts about severe weather conditions, which can be important for outdoor activities and emergency preparedness.
  7. No Backlit Keyboard: The keyboard is not backlit, which can make it difficult to use in low-light conditions. This can be inconvenient when using the radio at night or in poorly lit environments.
  8. Limited Programming Options: The programming options are limited compared to some other radios. You may not be able to customize the radio’s settings as much as you would like.

My Opinion:

Despite its shortcomings, the Tidradio TD-H3 is a good value for the price. It’s a versatile radio that can be used for a variety of purposes, including GMRS, amateur radio, and public safety. I was very surprised by the tiny stature of the TD-H3, especially when compared to the TD-H8. Once I programmed and started using it I was able see the advantages to the small size, see Positive item one above.

However, it’s important to be aware of its limitations before purchasing it. If you need a radio with excellent audio quality, long battery life, and advanced features, you may want to consider other options. But for casual users and those on a budget, the TD-H3 is a solid choice.
