Radtel RT-890

Overall, the Radtel RT-890 is a fantastic value proposition for hams on a budget or those seeking a feature-rich, easy-to-use radio for everyday adventures. While it may not match the bells and whistles of top-tier models, its solid build, clear audio, and extensive functionality make it a compelling choice for casual communication, weather monitoring, and exploring different bands. For experienced hams looking for ultimate flexibility and customization, there might be better options out there. But for everyone else, the RT-890 is a fun, functional, and surprisingly capable radio that won’t disappoint.

Pros:

  • Packed with features: This radio throws the kitchen sink in terms of functionality. From covering all major ham bands (VHF/UHF) to boasting NOAA weather channels, aviation band reception, and FM radio, you’ve got options galore. Dual-band, dual display, and dual standby capabilities make juggling frequencies a breeze. However, I prefer turning off the Dual Watch to make things less confusing.
  • Easy to use: The large, color LCD makes navigating menus and monitoring vital stats intuitive. Buttons are well-placed and responsive, even with gloves on.
  • Crystal-clear audio: Both sending and receiving audio are crisp and clean, even on crowded bands. The built-in speaker is surprisingly loud for its size, and the microphone transmits your voice faithfully.
  • Solid build quality: The RT-890 feels reassuringly hefty and well-constructed. The included belt clip is sturdy, and the radio itself has held up well to bumps and scrapes during my outdoor excursions.
  • Long battery life: The included Li-ion battery packs a punch, easily lasting a full day of moderate use.

Cons:

  • Menu diving: While features are abundant, accessing some settings requires digging through menus. A dedicated button for frequently used functions would be a welcome addition.
  • Limited programmability: Compared to some higher-end handhelds, the RT-890 offers less customization in terms of memory channels and scanning options. The device is Chirp programmable if you use the Ruyage UV-58 PLus settings.
  • Instruction manual: The included manual is pretty terrible. It can be unclear in most areas and is fairly useless.

Final rating: 4 out of 5 stars
